Limonene (Pronounced “lim-o-neen”)

July 15, 2022

Hey friends! July is here and summer is in full swing in our Golden State. We hope you’re out and about, soaking up the warm California sunshine like our beautiful LAKE GRADE cannabis trees — and the dedicated team of plant-tending wizards at Napa Valley Fumé — currently catching rays and producing gorgeous buds in sunny Lake County, CA. Sure, summertime means fun time, but, in our experience, learning can be fun too. Especially when it comes to knowing more about the magical, medicinal plant we all know and love. We thought we would take a moment today to drop some knowledge on you to enhance your cannabis experience and appreciate this powerful and versatile natural medicine.

As you might have figured out by now, we’re making it our mission to #FreeTheTerpenes, moving the conversation about cannabis beyond THC to include terpenes, the organic compounds that are responsible for the aromas, flavors, and colors of our favorite plants and the fruits they bear. Terpenes tend to get overshadowed by the more popular and well-known cannabinoids THC and CBD and we are working to change that, shining a light on the medicinal benefits of these naturally occurring chemical components of your favorite herb.

Today we’re shining the spotlight on Limonene. If you’ve ever peeled an orange or other citrus fruit and smelled the invigorating scent left on your hands, you’ve had a direct experience of D-Limonene. Found mainly in the oils of citrus rinds in lemons, limes, grapefruit, and oranges, D-Limonene compromises nearly 97% of orange essential oils and is one of the most common terpenes found in nature.

D-Limonene is used in countless products. In addition to its use as a food and beverage flavoring agent, D-Limonene is also used in cleaning products, cosmetics, fragrances, and even as an organic pesticide where it not only enhances the scents of your favorite products but also plays a leading role as an active ingredient, killing germs, deterring pests, dissolving grease, and more.

Because D-Limonene can permeate skin tissue, it’s considered to be an effective carrier for transdermal drug delivery. Limonene has also been found to relieve heartburn and acid reflux, has been used clinically to dissolve cholesterol-containing gallstones, and even reduces tumor growth in the body.

D-Limonene can also be found in high concentrations in some of your favorite cannabis strains, delivering anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties. Limonene-rich strains within the LAKE GRADE menu include both our proprietary Indica strain, Purple Gelato, and our proprietary Sativa strain, Lemon Sour Diesel. Mood elevation, inflammation reduction, what’s not to love?!! There are so many positive qualities to this prevalent and extremely useful terpene and we’re only scratching the surface.
