Pinene (Pronounced “Pie-neen”)

September 30, 2022

The next stop on our terpene tour brings us to Pinene. Pinene has a simple chemical structure relative to other terpenes — but don’t let that fool you — its benefits are vast. As its name implies, Pinene is the terpene behind the fragrance of pine trees as well as other conifers. Pinene has both an alpha and beta variety that are distinguished by a slight change in their chemical makeup. Both varieties of Pinene are found in cannabis and Alpha Pinene is thought to be the most abundant terpene found in nature. Beyond conifers and cannabis, Pinene can be found in a wide range of your favorite plants, including rosemary, dill, basil, parsley, and eucalyptus.

Have you ever heard of forest breathing? The activity of walking or hiking through pine forests is integral to Japanese culture and is thought to have therapeutic benefits. The forest environment is chock-full of terpenes with Pinene leading the way.

Pinene is known to be a fantastic bronchodilator, as well as having anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and neuroprotective properties. Pinene may also indirectly influence your mood with its energizing and uplifting effects.

Pinene is used in cleaning products (who doesn’t remember Pinesol?!) for its antibacterial properties and pleasant aroma. Many forms of aroma therapy and scented candles have a pine scent, especially those that evoke the spirit of winter holidays like Christmas.

When it comes to cannabis, Pinene has been shown to slow the breakdown of acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter) and it may mitigate some of the side effects brought on by THC. Strains high in Pinene have been shown to reduce short-term memory impairment and this powerful terpene also appears to play a role in learning, helping with alertness and attention.

If Pinene sounds like your jam, look for the scent of fresh pine as you choose your flower. It’s a personal favorite of our cannabis scientist who shares, “I generally feel far more “with it” and don’t lack the ability to be able to retain focus and attention.” You can find Pinene in your favorite LakeGrade strains like our proprietary Lemon Sour Diesel, or, if you aren’t a Sativa fan, our Whitezilla is a great choice and should relax you without giving you the 1000-yard stare. Check ’em out! They might be just what you’re looking for!
